Повечето забележителни постройки в Пловдив от периода на Римската империя имат богато украсени подови покрития с големи композиции от мозайки. Много мозайки от този вид са открити на територията на Стария град. Традицията на мозаечното изкуство процъфтява. Например: Археологически комплекс Еирене ( това е християнското име на Пенелопа, местен патриций ). Най – ранно откритата мозайка има датировка от 1 – 2 век, но намерените от периода 4 – 5 век са най – много на брой. Този български град притежава най – голямото по количество и най – значимите като естетика римски мозайки. Най – обичани и популярни теми и сюжети за античните многоцветни мозайки са митологичните сцени ( Дионис и неговият антураж, Орфей и др. ), геометричен дизайн, фигури на хора и животни, природа, всекидневен живот.
